Cluster Palm

Chamaedorea costaricana

Cluster Palm is one of the most useful clumping palms for Auckland gardens where privacy screening, soft boundary planting, and lower and mid-level coverage are needed. It forms dense groups of upright stems with green fronds, giving useful cover without the problems of running bamboo.

It works well for screening neighbours, fences, tanks, spa and pool areas, courtyards, and sheltered garden edges. Cluster Palm is best in protected or partly shaded sites, but hardened plants can also be used in full sun where the soil is suitable and watering is reliable through dry periods.

At Auckland Palm Centre, we can help choose the right grade for the site, from smaller plants for grouped planting through to larger, fuller grades where immediate screening is needed. Current grades change, so contact us for sizing, pricing, and availability.

Quick guide

Best for: Privacy screening, boundary planting, pool and spa screening, courtyards, sheltered subtropical gardens, underplanting, and softening fences or tanks.

Light: Best in part shade or filtered light. Hardened plants can also be used in full sun where soil is suitable and watering is reliable through dry periods.

Wind: Best in sheltered to moderately sheltered sites. Not a windbreak palm.

Water: Needs regular moisture during establishment and through dry periods. Avoid letting the root zone dry out.

Growth rate: Medium in suitable sheltered, watered conditions.

Screening: Larger, fuller grades give faster visual coverage. Smaller grades are useful for grouped planting where there is time for the screen to develop.

Buying help: Ask us to help choose the right Cluster Palm grade for your screening height, site exposure, light level, timeframe, and budget.

Why choose Cluster Palm

Cluster Palm is one of the most practical palms for privacy screening in Auckland gardens. It grows as a clump of upright stems, so it gives lower and mid-level coverage in a way that solitary trunking palms usually cannot.

It is useful where you want to soften a fence, screen a neighbour, hide a tank, create privacy around a spa or pool area, or add a subtropical layer under taller palms. The upright stems give a clean screening effect, but the plant is still a palm, not running bamboo.

Cluster Palm is not the right choice for every site. It performs best where there is shelter, suitable soil, and enough moisture through dry periods. For exposed wind, dry banks, or harsh reflected heat, another palm may be a better option.

Cluster Palms in Auckland conditions

Cluster Palms suit sheltered Auckland gardens where the soil can be kept moist but free-draining. They are best in part shade or filtered light, especially where nearby buildings, fences, or planting give some protection from cold or drying wind.

Full-sun planting is possible with hardened stock, but it needs better watering and more site judgement through dry periods. Avoid dry exposed banks, harsh reflected heat, cold wind corridors, and poor drainage.

Sun, wind, and exposure

Cluster Palm is not a windbreak palm. For exposed boundaries, ridgelines, or harsh coastal wind, choose a tougher plant or use Cluster Palm behind existing shelter.

Full sun is not usually the issue by itself. The risk is full sun combined with dry soil, reflected heat, or exposed wind. Use hardened plants and keep the root zone watered through dry periods.

Grade and size guide

Cluster Palms are usually chosen for coverage, so the fullness of the plant matters as much as the container size. Smaller grades are useful for grouped planting where there is time for the screen to develop. Larger, fuller grades are better where immediate privacy or stronger visual coverage is needed.

As a general guide:

Small to mid grades: Suitable for grouped planting, underplanting, courtyards, and lower-cost screening where the plants have time to fill out.

45L and larger: Better for garden screening where stronger height, density, and immediate presence are wanted.

80L and larger grades: Best for privacy areas, pool and spa screening, large courtyards, and landscape projects where visual coverage matters from day one.

Current Cluster Palm grades can change, so contact us for current sizing, pricing, and availability.

Why buy Cluster Palm from Auckland Palm Centre

Cluster Palms vary a lot in height, fullness, stem density, and screening value. At the nursery, you can compare grades in person and choose plants that suit the level of coverage you need.

We can help you decide whether Cluster Palm is the right plant for the site, or whether another palm would be better for stronger wind, drier ground, faster height, or a different look.

For larger or visually important screening jobs, you can choose the exact Cluster Palms you want. We tag them with your details and deliver those same selected plants to your site where access allows.

Soil, water, and establishment

Cluster Palms perform best in free-draining soil with organic matter worked through the planting area. They like moisture, but they should not sit in stagnant or waterlogged ground.

After planting, water well and keep the root zone from drying out while the plants establish. This is especially important in full sun, dry courtyards, raised beds, or areas with reflected heat from paving or walls.

Mulch helps keep the root zone cooler and more evenly moist. Keep mulch away from the stems, and avoid burying the base of the clump.

For screening, plant spacing should match the grade and the coverage needed. Larger grades can be spaced wider than smaller plants, while smaller grades usually need closer spacing or more time to fill in.

Transport, handling, and delivery

Smaller Cluster Palm grades can fit in cars, utes, or trailers depending on plant size and width. We can help load suitable plants at the nursery.

Larger grades are best moved carefully so the stems, fronds, and rootball are protected. Where access allows, we can deliver larger plants to your site.

Cluster Palms should not be crushed or tied too tightly during transport. Protect the stems and foliage, and avoid letting the rootball dry out before planting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cluster Palm good for privacy screening?

Yes. Cluster Palm is one of the better palms for privacy screening in sheltered Auckland gardens because it grows as a clump of upright stems rather than a single trunk. Larger grades give faster visual coverage, while smaller grades need more time to fill in.

Is Cluster Palm the same as Bamboo Palm?

Cluster Palm is sometimes referred to as Bamboo Palm or Costa Rican Bamboo Palm because of its upright bamboo-like stems, but at Auckland Palm Centre we use Cluster Palm as the primary name for Chamaedorea costaricana.

It is not true bamboo and does not run underground like invasive bamboo. Some other palms are also sold as Bamboo Palm, including Chamaedorea seifrizii. If you are looking for Bamboo Palm specifically, see our Bamboo Palm page.

Can Cluster Palm grow in full sun?

Yes, but only with the right conditions. Hardened Cluster Palms can be planted in full sun where the soil is suitable and the root zone is kept watered through dry periods. Full sun combined with dry soil, reflected heat, or exposed wind is the main risk.

Can Cluster Palm grow indoors?

Cluster Palm can be used indoors in bright spaces, but it is usually more valuable as an outdoor screening and sheltered garden palm. Indoors, it still needs good light, airflow, free drainage, and sensible watering.

Is Cluster Palm good in wind?

Cluster Palm is best in sheltered to moderately sheltered sites. It is not a windbreak palm. Cold, dry, or exposed wind can mark the foliage and thin the plant over time.

How fast does Cluster Palm grow?

Cluster Palm has a medium growth rate in suitable Auckland conditions. Growth is better with shelter, moisture, free-draining soil, and regular care through establishment.

How tall does Cluster Palm get?

Final height depends on grade, age, soil, water, light, and shelter. In Auckland gardens, it is usually used for lower to mid-level screening rather than very tall screening.

Will Cluster Palm roots cause damage?

Cluster Palm has fibrous palm roots, not large woody invasive roots. It is generally low risk near paving, pools, retaining walls, and buildings compared with many ordinary trees. Use sensible spacing, especially near old pipes, weak retaining walls, shallow paving, or poor drainage.
